Author Insight
Eugen Bacon
Eugen Bacon is an African Australian author who is a Solstice, Ignyte, British Fantasy, Locus, and Foreword Indies Award winner, a twice World Fantasy and Shirley Jackson Award finalist, and a finalist in the Philip K. Dick and the Nommo Awards for speculative fiction by Africans. She is an Otherwise Fellow, and was also announced in the honor list for “‘doing exciting work in gender and speculative fiction.” Danged Black Thing made the Otherwise Award Honor List as a “sharp collection of Afro-Surrealist work.”
Eugen is passionate about motherhood, climate action, social justice, stories of culture, tradition, our past, our future, black people stories… She’s a mother, a woman, a daughter, a sister, a writer, an editor, a scholar, a colleague, a mentor, a friend. The creative space where she tells stories is literary speculative fiction. Eugen is the queen of genre-bending and writes across forms and genres.

Black speculative fiction equips me with the foundations to cultivate inclusive worlds and characters, explore my place in the universe, ask fundamental philosophical questions, interrogate the past and learn from it, and contemplate the unlimited potential of futurisms in my fiction.
