Over the months ahead, we will introduce you to each author contributing to our cross-genre anthology, Of Shadows, Stars, and Sabers. Today, we are delighted to introduce the wonderfully talented Eugen Bacon!
Eugen (Yu-gin) Bacon is an African Australian author. She’s a Solstice Award recipient, Locus Award winner, British Fantasy and Foreword Indies Award winner, a twice World Fantasy Award finalist, and a finalist in other awards, including the Shirley Jackson, Philip K. Dick Award, as well as the Nommo Awards for speculative fiction by Africans. Eugen was announced in the honor list of the Otherwise Fellowships for “doing exciting work in gender and speculative fiction.” Danged Black Thing made the Otherwise Award Honor List as a “sharp collection of Afro-Surrealist work.”
In her own words, Eugen is a computer scientist mentally re-engineered into creative writing. She is passionate about chocolate, bubbles, storytelling, swimming, and sake.
Eugen’s story, “The Shadow Eater of Órino-Rin,” takes place on the Afrocentric planet of Órino-Rin, and is a hauntingly beautiful Sauútiverse tale. You can read it in Of Shadows, Stars, and Sabers. NEWS: This short story has been longlisted for a BSFA Award. Congrats, Eugen!
We also published Eugen’s novella The Nga’phandileh Whisperer: A Sauútiverse Novella. This has now been longlisted for a BSFA Award for Shorter Fiction!
Eugen also contributed to our magic-themed anthology, Of Enchantment, Enigma, and the Infinite with the short story “Spells Don’t Happen with a Bang.”
